I am posting early today because I have a heavy schedule today: Brady has an audiologist appointment this morning (he is complaining of ringing in his ears), then I have to go to school all afternoon to volunteer in Abby's class, then I have a dentist appointment this evening to have my teeth whitened (super excited about that). Not that you want all the details!
One of the things I get emails about the most (besides Disney these days lol!) is about the "bleed areas" in the photo books, namely ArtsCow. I have been meaning to and promising for quite some time to make up templates and I have finally done it.
Using the PNG format templates:
1. Open a new document in your program - 8 x8 size.
2. Drag the template onto your document.
3. Click on the layer directly below the template and start building your page. By working beneath the template you will always "see" it and be aware of what will not show when your book is printed. You need to make sure that your background paper extends into the bleed area to ensure that you will not have any white borders in your book. If you want to have elements that go off the page slightly then make sure that they too are in the bleed area.
I print my layouts in the 8x8 books, namely because they are less expensive, but I create all of my layouts in 12x12 size. When you open up the template go to image-image size - and change the size to 12x12 (3600 pixels x 3600 pixels) and then follow the instructions above. I would suggest saving the templates that you increase the size of so that you don't have to do it every time. I did not do it for you because I didn't want there to be any confusion about the fact that these templates will only work for 8x8 books. The bleed areas for 12x12 books are different. I save and upload my layouts to ArtsCow in the 12x12 size and they automatically shrink them for 8x8 books. If you have a slower internet connection than you might want to decrease the size of your pages to 8x8 before uploading.
Important: the above instructions apply to the "inside pages" of your book. The front cover, back cover and spine of the books are not 8x8 size. To use these templates I would work directly on them by dragging your items onto the templates (move the template up in the layers palette so you can see the bleed area and work directly underneath) or by creating a new document in the same size as the template (click on image-image size- and just take note of the size of the document) and following the instructions above.
If you have trouble seeing the grey bleed area in my templates on your layout (depending on the colours you are working with or your eyes lol!) then take your paint bucket tool and drop a different colour onto the template.
I have created these templates using the guides provided by both ArtsCow and Shutterfly - they have the exact same bleed area for the inside pages and are only a few pixels off in size (using the templates will be perfectly fine for either site).
*Do not resize these templates with the intention of creating 12x12 books - the bleed area is not the same*
More photo book questions? Please leave them here in the comments and I will come back to add to this post. It is tagged under tutorials in the Categories and will not be removed and the download will not expire so you can always come back to reference it :)
